Kingston Roller Race: Show Up and Throw Down

It’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  You didn’t hit the lottery, so you’re not going to West Yellowstone this year. Bummer.  What do you need to do to get ready for the big day?  Got the turkey?  Check.  Know which football games you want to watch?  Check.  Show up and throw down at Kingston Nordic’s annual roller ski fest?  Check.

Falling on Sunday, 20 November, this is a great event to blow out the cobwebs.  I used to sneer at races without significant elevation gain, but this flat, fast venue is a great spot to work high-speed techniques.

The races benefit the Kingston (NY) High School nordic ski team.  Sign up for the 5 k classic or the 10 k skate.  Many sign up for both.  Greg Malia, race director and Kingston Nordic’s coach, offers special pricing for teams coming down for the day.  Several area high schools show up.

There are always some juniors with the strength and moxie to double pole the classic event on skate gear.  In the past, highs school teams have come from as far as Johnsburg NY, over 130 miles away.   Uh, Lenox MA is a mere 86 miles away.  Bennington VT?  94 miles.  If you’re a master blaster, there are plenty of skiers here who’ll give you a run for your money.  The prize table isn’t shabby either.  Come on down and wave goodbye to fall on 20 November.
