Did Petter Northug slack off last year? Might that have contributed to the sickness that caused him to scratch from the Vasaloppet?
An article on langrenn.com suggests that with no World Championships or Olympics in the 2011-2012 season, Northug may have relaxed his strict training regimen last year. According to langrenn.com, last year he strayed from a strict diet and socialized more than usual, impacting his sleep patterns.
Northug is now back to a strict training regimen and and he’s cut out junk food. The stomach bug that waylaid him in March is history. Although he skipped some of the summer roller ski races in Norway, coach Trond Nystad says Northug is “healthy and fit” and “looks promising” for next season.
With World Championships in Italy this winter, followed by the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Northug is homed in like a laser beam on technique and fitness.
